Community Spotlight: Modern Meadowmont
Chapel Hill community mixes old with new

Situated on more than 400 wooded acres near the heart of Chapel Hill lies Meadowmont, a neighborhood that’s as modern as it is rooted in history. The community — developed in 1999 by Chapel Hill-based East West Partners — is a living tribute to its namesake, a 20,000-square-foot Georgian Revival home that sits just above the sprawling neighborhood.

Betty Kenan remembers getting a phone call from her husband, Frank, in 1976 about some vacant retail space at University Square. “Frank called and said, ‘If you want to do that shop you’ve been talking about, I have some space I’ll rent you,’ ” she recalls.

Hurricane Tracker: Just up from Charlotte

For 12 seasons, whenever a Carolina Hurricanes player was injured, the team would have to arrange a flight — often with connections — to bring a replacement to Raleigh from a city more than 500 miles away. Beginning this fall, all the Canes will need to do is make sure the new player knows the way to Interstate 85.

Islands Unknown

Paperhand Puppet Intervention in Saxapahaw will perform the 11th annual “Islands Unknown” Aug. 20-22, Aug. 27-29 and Sept. 3-6 at Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill. In the 3-D epic, a wandering young girl finds herself in a mysterious library that’s being consumed by a rising sea of information. She’s soon afloat on a paper boat, heading toward an adventure filled with beasts, pirates, monsters and gods. Tickets cost $12 per person for adults and $8 per person for kids ages 3 through 12; children 2 and younger get in free.
